Newmarket: Panzanella’s Italian Pizzeria & Restaurant

The skinny: Panzanella’s was first recommended to us by Twitter follower¬†@brett_ski, and then it was seconded more recently to us by New Hampshire comedian @JustonMcKinney, our third celebrity recommendation!

Pizzas here start at $6.25 (10-inch small), $9.25 (16-inch large) and $11.25 (18-inch jumbo). Basic toppings, such as ham, black olives and pineapple, are $1.25 for the small and $1.50 for the large and jumbo. Gourmet toppings are $1.50 for the small and $2.25 for the large and jumbo, and include artichoke hearts, eggplant and pesto.

Specialty pies are also available at Panzanella’s, and the options are what you’d expect at most places. You could order the Gourmet ($10.95/$15.95/$17.95), with eggplant, chicken, garlic, feta, tomatoes and spinach; the Taco ($11.95/$16.95/$18.95), with ground beef, taco sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, olives, tortilla chips, salsa and sour cream; and the Vegetarian ($9.95/$14.95/$16.95), with onions, mushrooms, green peppers, broccoli, black olives and tomatoes.

Calzones are another option at Panzanella’s and come in small ($8.95) and large ($11.95).

Deidre thought the most noticeable part of the pizza was the crust. Just by pulling the first slice onto her plate, she could tell how soft it was — definitely a slice that requires two hands. And when she pulled the slice onto her plate, it was nice to see a lack of grease on the pan. Andrew thought the crust was cooked just right, just a bit brown, but definitely not burned. The bonus was the shredded Parmesan cheese that was baked into the edges, adding a bit of unexpected flavor.

Deidre normally loves the sauce on pizza, but the combination of all the cheeses left her not missing it too much. The blend of provolone, American, cheddar and Parmesan had her thinking of the perfect grilled cheese sandwich, in which all these cheeses could be included. Andrew was thinking more along the lines of a tasty cheesy, garlic bread, and in fact, some pizza places serve garlic bread in pizza form. They did agree, though, that the amount of cheese was perfect, as Deidre really had to bite in to make sure it all didn’t slide off halfway through the slice.

After the cheese, Andrew’s favorite part was the blend of olive oil and garlic, which probably contributed to his thoughts of garlic bread. But the pairing was essential, keeping the pizza from tasting too dry, as if you were biting into a bit wheel of cheese.

Andrew thought the White Pizza held up very well in the cold pizza challenge. Everything tasted fresh and chewy, and the olive oil even managed to keep the cheese moist and flavorful. His only regret was that, without any toppings, it wasn’t all that filling. But some pizzas are so good, they just don’t need to get bogged down by toppings. This one fits the bill.
